Albany Community Together Inc is a CDFI loan program and provides business development services that are focused on African-American and low-income borrowers, which are usually minorities in our market. Over the past several years, ACT! has worked carefully and deliberately to fine tune the right model for an African American led CDFI in Georgia. The strategic framework is based on a number of opportunities for growth that translate into increased demand for capital, including:

Increasing visibility in the community as a result of expanded outreach activities
Increasing larger loans for established growth-oriented small businesses

Our business development services help African-American business owners navigate through the business economy to become sustainable and wealth-building entities. They recognize the need to become owners of commercial real estate and, when possible, to buy business equipment to strengthen the balance sheet and future growth for the business. ACT! offers two courses that are focused on teaching business savviness, "Understanding Your financials and what they say to lenders about your business", and "Getting to a yes, when the answer is clearly no." These workshops help the borrower understand what is on the personal credit report, and what a lender looks for in a "bankable" deal. Our strategy for our business owners is to build wealth and sustainable legacy businesses.

Loans:

Our small business loans are made to established businesses that are experiencing growth. The loans are for $50,000 to $150,000, and typically the loan involves a bank partnership. ACT! fills the gap for financing, taking second position on the loan. The Short-Term Working Capital Loan for up to $50,000 is used by businesses for short-term operational needs such as accounts payable, payroll, inventory, repairs or other immediate needs. This loan helps businesses with cash flow. This loan is particularly valuable to African-American businesses who need the cash flow to compete for government contracts and to scale their business operations. The STEP-Up Loan for up to $10,000. This is a specialized loan that was designed specifically to meet ACT!’s client needs for an introductory and graduated loan product. It is a micro loan and part of ACT!’s Micro Business Accelerated Loan Program. The purpose is to build credit, while providing development services for the expansion of existing small and micro businesses as well as to create new ones. This loan is specifically targeted towards low-income and African-American businesses needing to scale and grow their business enterprises.

Workshops:

To Your Credit: Helps individuals learn how to read and understand their credit report.

Storytelling

Dr. Teresa Williams, Owner of Total Care Pharmacy

At the corner on East Walton Street in Baconton sits a small brick building. However, it is not just any building, it is the first Black-owned pharmacy and a ribbon cutting was held on February 29, 2016 morning to celebrate its re-opening. Dr. Teresa Mitchell, owner of Total Care Pharmacy, says this is an exciting opportunity for her. "I'm very excited to be a leader and entrepreneur in the area," said Mitchell. No stranger to Baconton, Dr. Mitchell has been a practicing pharmacist for over 20 years, and she is from Mitchell County and being an entrepreneur is something Mitchell has dreamed about for a while.

"We started back in September 2014, and for me I would say that it was a God move," Mitchell said. "As far as the area, it was a seed that my father planted before he passed. He told me that if I ever wanted to start a business, to start it in Baconton because it was the hub, it was the center, it was going to grow."

Dr. Teresa Mitchell approached her bank to fund her business venture. Renasant Bank reached out to a local Community Development Financial Institute (CDFI), Albany Community Together, Inc. to help make the business deal work. Renasant was able to make the senior loan and ACT! came in with subordinate financing to help the owner reach the finish line.

Frank Ross, Cinnabon Franchise

When Frank Ross, Jr. decided to open his business it was during one of the worst economic times this country has faced since the Great Depression. But, nevertheless, armed with a good business plan and a proven business model, he forged ahead with his ideas. The results were unbelievable. The franchise owner has defied his franchiser's expectations.

Cinnabon Bakery in the Albany Mall was opened only three months, when it learned that it was the number one store in the country in sales. Mr. Ross exceeded his projected job creation of 8, and now employees 19 people, the equivalent of 9 FTE’s. Mr. Ross has been featured on national television, Fox News Network. This is exceptional news for Albany, Georgia. For Albany to have the number one store in the country says a lot about the economic climate here and what the City of Albany is doing for its citizens who want to start a business. Frank Ross, Jr., received $100,000 in financing from the City of Albany (EDA). Mr. Ross and wife are currently in the process of opening their second location, in Columbus, Georgia. The store is scheduled to open the second week in December 2010, two location openings within one year, phenomenal growth.
