Mission

We exist to create economic opportunities, build partnerships and strengthen communities on the Northwest Side of Milwaukee.

Storytelling

In 2021, NWSCDC helped to facilitate the transfer of ownership of the only Black woman-owned gas station in Wisconsin. NWSCDC introduced the seller to the buyer, another Black woman entrepreneur, who ultimately purchased the business with financing assistance from NWSCDC in the form of a $893K loan. The buyer also used portions of the funding to replace the underground fuel storage tanks and renovate the pumps and much of the interior of the gas station, which now has a new food take-out operation. It is unlikely that a bank would have financed this deal (environmental risks of older gas stations are generally avoided by banks). It also could have been difficult for the seller to find another local Black woman buyer, if not for the connection provided by NWSCDC.

In another example, NWSCDC helped a Black, family-owned startup break into the trucking industry. We financed the startup in 2020 with $200,000 for leases on trucks in order for the business to qualify for a FedEx delivery contract. The owner couple have extensive leadership experience but were new to the trucking and logistics industry. They were attracted to the industry for its ‚recession-proof nature. We worked with the owners for a full year on refining and updating their business plan in order to get to a place where the financing made sense, the FedEx requirements would be satisfied, and the business was set up for success. Since closing, NWSCDC has continued to deliver business coaching and technical assistance.
